On July 3, 2010, Plant a Wish visited the town of Bad Axe, MI. Joe had met a local nursery owner Josh Roggenbuck and his wife while they were on their honeymoon on Maui, and Joe immediately knew that we had to do our Michigan planting here. Josh was a great guy, and who could pass up the opportunity to bring a tree planting tour to a town called “Bad Axe”? It also turns out that most, if not all of the old pine trees in the area (in “The Thumb” of Michigan) were devastated by a historic fire in the 1800s, so planting was needed.
Since we made a connection with this town early in our planning process, and Bad Axe was last on our tour, we were able to put together a great planting event. We planted 5 good-sized trees trees in the school yard, creating a future canopy at a brand-new “outdoor classroom” at Bad Axe High School. Teachers at the school had recently received a grant from the EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) program at Purdue University. It was a gorgeous day, and we met and interviewed some top-notch people.
