Rachel’s most recent “Pick of the Week” had our hearts laughing with joy. Sammy, the adorable son of one of Sara’s childhood buddies, was the highlight of our Massachusetts tree planting. That was a gorgeous summer day, and we gathered in the historic downtown area of Lowell to plant a beautiful red bud (Cercis canadensis), which was donated by the awesome owners of Mahoney’s. A few quick updates from Sara & Joe to you:
- We’re just a few days away from having all 83 hours of our Summer 2010 Tour footage logged, thanks to our awesome post-production intern Rachel Tekula (who also edited the video above). The next step is to send the interviews out for transcription, and to edit together two videos: a 1 minute theatrical trailer, and a 5-8 minute short for the Winter/Spring 2011 festivals.
- We’re planting commemorative “Plant a Wish” trees on Maui – they’re the perfect gift for a loved one and we’ll even plant your wishes underneath the tree and give you the GPS coordinates (just like we do on the tour). Click here for more details on that. It helps us raise funds for the next leg of our tour, which proves to be longer, more intense, and more expensive (we’re bringing a 3rd person – we must feed them well).
- We are looking for some creative geniuses to brainstorm with about our next tour, and the best way to power our road trip. Last time, we off-set the carbon emissions with the planting of 50 koa trees with Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods. Now we’re looking to take it another step further and try to avoid using oil at all. Do you know someone doing something marvelous with oil-free automobiles? Care to forward this email to them? Thanks!
- We are putting together a monthly email newsletter called “Taking Root” for everyone who has donated or contributed to our project. We want to report certain information specifically to you, the fans and friends of this project, and share special insider information. Special news, footage, and photos, access to private online screenings of the unfinished film, t-shirt giveaways…things like this. Interested? Please donate or sponsor a tree planting on Maui, and then sign up for the Newsletter here. First issue lands in your inbox in early October!
We’re really excited for what the upcoming months will bring. We’ve been able to make great progress with the film footage, have a game plan for entering a short into festivals, and have set our sights on late winter/early spring to go on tour and finish our goal of planting native trees in all 50 states! We know that it’s the first day of Fall, buy hey – let’s get growing!
