Aloha and welcome to the Plant A Wish project!

Sara and Joe with Koa TreesWhat is Plant a Wish?

Founded by Hawaii-based husband and wife team Joseph Imhoff and Sara Tekula, Plant a Wish is a public awareness project aiming to inspire the restoration of native habitats around America, engaging communities and inspiring individuals to take an active role in the health of our environment. It’s also a social media networking experiment and a documentary film project.

What are we doing?

Well, it’s simple. We travel around the country, select a location that needs a native tree, find caretakers willing to look after the tree, find a nursery willing to contribute a tree, gather community members together at a specific time and place, and voila! We plant it with lots of compost, water, mulch, and we even write down our wishes and plant them under the tree. Then, we move on and do it again in the next state.

We are also videographers, so we’re shooting and interviewing as we go, with a goal to complete a feature-length documentary film about our adventure by early 2012. You can follow us and help direct our focus while we are traveling through our blog.

We have recently completed the first half of the country, planting native trees in 25 states in less than 6 weeks! Our Summer 2010 mission through the mid-west and northeast to plant native trees was a great success, and we have amassed over 83 hours of beautiful footage for our film.

Wanna know what we’veĀ  found out so far? Science is showing that the plants and trees around us have a more important role in our survival than we thought. Turns out that we need trees, and we can do something about it – in our parks, our schools, in our towns, even in our own backyards! We embark on this adventure to get closer to the fruition of our biggest wish: for future generations to enjoy an abundance of biodiversity, native plants and trees, fresh air, and clean water. This tour is a reminder that the future depends on us.

With aloha and gratitude,
Sara & Joe
